Water in sufficient quantity and quality is becoming the great challenge of our time for mankind. In many countries, the existing water reserves are now so severely overused that the negative consequences can no longer be overlooked. Countries in dry areas in particular are finding it increasingly difficult to meet the food requirements of their populations. At the same time, many people still have no access to clean drinking water, because the water has been contaminated with residential sewage or because untreated industrial sewage gets into the water. This situation will intensify in the coming years. Here, the development of the water market is characterised by four megatrends:

• The global population continues to rise. In the coming years, even more water ...than before will be needed, not only to meet personal needs but also for the ...production of food.
• In many countries, the infrastructure for supplying drinking water to the population ..and disposing of sewage is outdated. In the coming years, great investments are ..therefore needed, particularly to maintain the supply network.
• The requirements for water quality are increasing. Firstly, in developing and ..emerging countries, everyone needs to be afforded access to clean drinking ..water. Secondly, responses must be found to the new challenges arising as a ..result of micro-contamination and facing the industrial nations in particular.
• Due to climate change, the water supply will noticeably change in many regions. ..In certain areas, this will further intensify the situation with the water supply.

Based on an analysis of the present status and an evaluation of future market demand, four areas are defined, which stand out for their attractive potential for value added:

• Distribution and management: companies operating in this area ..provide solutions for the remediation of pipes, develop systems ..for the distribution and disposal of the water, act as suppliers and ..participate in the management of water resources.
• Comprehensive water treatment: companies from this area .. ..contribute to the purification of drinking water, the treatment of ..sewage and the desalination of sea water or provide the ..necessary measuring and control systems.
• Demand efficiency: this group includes companies supplying ..products and services that allow more efficient use of water in ..households or in industry.
• Water and food: companies in this group develop products that ..improve water efficiency in irrigation and food production. ..Alternatively, they produce bottled water.

Water is also a significant economic factor. 400 to 500 billion USD are spent every year on the provision, treatment and purification of water.
